ever since Kate and Julia, after the death of their brother Pat, had taken Mary Jane,
their only niece, to live with them in the dark gaunt house on Usher’s Island.

It was that of an old song of Aunt Julia’s—Arrayed for the Bridal.
To follow her voice, without looking at the singer’s face,
was to feel and share the excitement of swift and secure flight.

Gabriel took his seat boldly at the head of the table and plunged his fork firmly into the goose.
He felt quite at ease now for he was an expert carver and liked nothing better
