Jez Butterworth’s The Night Heron

The sighting of a rare bird has brought attention to the remote fens of England where two men, recently unemployed and being blackmailed for a horrible secret, struggle to survive in a broken cabin. One of them, Wattmore, is recreating an iconostasis, a vast painting of saints, which dominates the stage as both men, their lodger, and those they are running from all seek their own kind of salvation. Bertolt Brecht’s Mother Courage and her Children

In what many regard as Brecht’s masterpiece, Mother Courage profiteers from a constant state of war, as she loses her children to it one by one. Her cynical manipulation of the miseries of others robs her of her title, and at the play’s end she is mother to no one. Written in a burst of energy after the invasion of Poland, it is one of our principal ruminations on the nature of war.
