Direction

	Cynthia Meier (Director) is Co-Founder and Managing and Associate Artistic Director for The Rogue Theatre where she has adapted and directed James Joyce’s The Dead, Kafka’s Metamorphosis and F. Scott Fitzgerald's Tales of the Jazz Age, and directed Miss Julie, Hamlet, Rosencrantz and Guildenstern Are Dead, The Merchant of Venice, Waiting for Godot, Jerusalem, Betrayal, Arcadia, Richard III, Journey to the West, The Winter’s Tale, Shipwrecked!, New-Found-Land, Old Times, The Tempest, Naga Mandala, The Four of Us, Othello, Animal Farm, Orlando, Happy Days, The Good Woman of Setzuan, The Fever and The Cherry Orchard. She holds a Ph.D. in Performance Studies from the University of Arizona. She is co-founder of Bloodhut Productions, a company performing original monologues and comedy improvisation, which toured throughout the western United States. She also directed The Seagull (featuring Ken Ruta) for Tucson Art Theatre, and she directed Talia Shire in Sister Mendelssohn and Edward Herrmann in Beloved Brahms for Chamber Music Plus Southwest. Cynthia received the Mac Award for Best Director, Drama for Richard III in 2013, and for Arcadia in 2014. She has been nominated for seven Mac Awards for Best Actress from the Arizona Daily Star, and in 2008, she received the Mac Award for Best Actress for her performance of Stevie in Edward Albee’s The Goat at The Rogue Theatre. Notes from the Director

“The society that cherishes and keeps its myths alive will be nourished from the soundest, richest strata of the human spirit.” —Joseph Campbell           Four years ago, I sat in a theater at Oregon Shakespeare Festival and wept. All around me, people were standing and applauding the performance and I was a puddle of tears. The play wasn’t especially sad, but I was weeping because I was deeply moved by the beauty and truth of the play. That play was Mary Zimmerman’s The White Snake—a gentle retelling of the ancient Chinese tale of a snake who comes down the mountain to discover what it is to be human. I was struck at the time by the universality of the myth of the White Snake. Zimmerman had reached across cultures to find the common human desire to be loved for what we truly are. And although we may not be familiar with karma or the Bodhisatva or realgar wine or any number of Chinese festivals and locales described in the play, we understand this desire to be loved and accepted. When we finally left the theater in Oregon, I turned to Joe McGrath and said, “We have to bring this play to our audience in Tucson!” He agreed. That was four years ago. About the Playwright

	Mary Zimmerman (1960– ) is an American theatre director and playwright. Born in Nebraska, she spent much of her childhood in Hampstead Garden, England, and in Paris. She is currently a faculty member in the Performance Studies department at Northwestern University. She is an ensemble member of the Lookingglass Theatre Company and the Manilow Resident Director at the Goodman Theatre in Chicago. Zimmerman received degrees in theatre and performance studies at Northwestern University. She has earned national and international recognition in the form of numerous awards, including the prestigious John D. and Catherine T. MacArthur Fellowship in 1998. She won a 2002 Tony Award for Best Direction for her adaptation of Ovid's Metamorphoses. Other notable productions include Eleven Rooms of Proust, The Secret In The Wings, Pericles Prince of Tyre and Cymbeline. Zimmerman has adapted several literary works in addition to Metamorphoses, including Journey to the West (performed at The Rogue in September, 2012), The Odyssey, The Arabian Nights, The Notebooks of Leonardo da Vinci and Argonautika, the Greek story of Jason and the Argonauts' search for the Golden Fleece. Zimmerman has directed Bellini's La Sonnambula, Donizetti's Lucia di Lammermoor andRossini's Armida for the Metropolitan Opera. She is the director and co-librettist of the 2002 opera Galileo Galilei, with music by Philip Glass, commissioned by the Goodman Theatre.

	Bryn Booth (Ensemble), a recent graduate from the BFA Acting program at the University of Arizona and member of the Equity Membership Candidacy program, is proud to make her debut with the Rogue Theatre in The White Snake. Bryn was most recently seen as Juliet in Romeo & Juliet with Tucson’s Shakespeare in the Park. She performed many times with Arizona Repertory Theatre as Bianca in Othello, Justine in Frankenstein, and Fritzie in Cabaret. In recent years, she had the wonderful pleasure to understudy for Arizona Theatre Company’s productions of Romeo & Juliet as Lady Montague and Lady Capulet, and Of Mice and Men as Curley’s Wife. Bryn is excited to continue working with the Rogue later on this season in Macbeth. She is thankful for her family’s support, always to God for these blessings, and to be given the opportunity to work with such creative artists. Sterling Boyns (Ensemble) recently graduated from The University of Arizona with his BFA in Acting. He has appeared with The Rogue in Angels in America, Part One. His past credits include The Man Who Came to Dinner, The Glass Menagerie, A Midsummer Night’s Dream, Lend Me a Tenor, Barefoot in the Park and Rent (Arizona Repertory Theatre). In addition, he has appeared in Fences and Romeo and Juliet (Arizona Repertory Theatre). He has also performed in ATC Café Bohemia’s staged readings of Catapult and Octagon. 	Patty Gallagher (The White Snake) is an Artistic Associate of The Rogue Theatre and Professor of Theatre Arts at University of California Santa Cruz where she teaches movement, mask, Balinese dance, and clown traditions. 	Grace Kirkpatrick (Ensemble) has a BFA in Acting and minor in Psychology from the University of Arizona. Ryan Parker Knox (Xu Xian)   The Rogue’s 12th Anniversary Season marks Ryan’s fifth as a member of the Resident Acting Company. He is constantly humbled and inspired by the fierce intellect and thrilling passion of both his fellow Artists and The Rogue’s loyal patrons. Ryan has previously appeared in Uncle Vanya (2016 Arizona Daily Star Mac Award for Best Actor, Comedy), Angels in America Part One, The Bridge of San Luis Rey, By the Bog of Cats, Hamlet, Rosencrantz and Guildenstern Are Dead, The Picture of Dorian Gray, The Merchant of Venice, The Lady in the Looking Glass, Jerusalem, Awake and Sing, Dante’s Purgatorio, Betrayal, Arcadia (2014 Mac Award for Best Actor), Measure for Measure, Mistake of the Goddess (Hayavadana), Richard III, Kafka’s Metamorphosis, Mother Courage and Her Children, The Night Heron, and Journey to the West. You may also recognize her from an Arizona Lottery commercial. She is an Instructor for the School of Theatre, Film, and Television for The University of Arizona. She came to Tucson via Los Angeles where she worked with The Grand Guignolers, Cornerstone Theater Company, A Noise Within, The Antaeus Academy, and SITI Company. She has her MFA from the Dell’ Arte International School of Physical Theater and her BA from Smith College. Music Director’s Notes

For a play as musically intricate and rich as The White Snake I have a hard time expressing in words what I’ve tried to accomplish with the score. Though as we’ve solidified the sonic world of Lady Bai—of Westlake, of the Golden Monastery, etc.—I’ve felt more and more that the reason for this comes down to one word: “pure.” This is a pure story in the sense that like many of the great myths and fairy tales from around the world, its message and its beauty speaks for itself. This is not to say The White Snake is a simple story, nor that the music you’ll hear running almost continuously throughout this production is rudimentary or basic, in fact quite the opposite. Rather what Callie Hutchinson and Karen Falkenstrom have helped me create is a score that aims to speak directly to the earnestness of the love between Lady Bai and Xu Xian, to the excitement and enchanting nature of a visit to Hangzhou, to the angst and worry of a young man who feels unworthy of the love he receives, and to the duality of goodness and darkness in even the most pious among us. In preparation I’ve researched traditional Chinese musicology, though you’ll hear a range of instruments from a variety of cultures. Drums, cymbals, and string instruments from Japan, China, and Korea plus retuned and repurposed guitars, mandolins, flutes, and fiddles will underscore omniscient cityscapes and climactic battles as well as explore the most internal and private moments of these characters. Weaved throughout are the beautiful singing voices of our actors who spoil me with their dedication to take on this music together. 	Jake Sorgen (Music Direction and Original Composition) was music director for Uncle Vanya/em>, Angels in America Part One, The Bridge of San Luis Rey, Miss Julie, By the Bog of Cats, Hamlet, Rosencrantz and Guildenstern Are Dead, The Merchant of Venice, The Lady in the Looking Glass, Waiting for Godot, Jerusalem and Awake and Sing at The Rogue Theatre, and has performed as a musician at The Rogue in Purgatorio and Betrayal. Jake is an improviser/composer/musician originally from Woodstock, New York, and has composed for and performed with musicians, actors, and dancers in Amsterdam, Austin, Boston, New York, and Tucson. Most recently Jake studied improvised music with violist Mary Oliver and movement with dancer Katie Duck and performed and studied with members of the Instant Composers Pool and the Creative Music Studio in the Netherlands and New York.
Karen Falkenstrom (Percussion) is the co-founder and Director of Odaiko Sonora, Tucson’s taiko (Japanese drumming) team. Since 2002, Karen and her group members have given over a thousand performances at local events. Karen has traveled throughout the USA, Canada, Mexico, the United Kingdom and Japan to teach, perform and train in taiko and Japanese folk traditions. Odaiko Sonora provided the music for The Rogue Theatre’s Richard III. A master taiko builder, Karen built the large drum seen in Journey to the West and most of those used in this production of The White Snake.
	Callie Hutchison (Violin and Viola) has performed with everyone from the Tampa Opera to Frank Sinatra Jr. As a soloist and chamber musician she has performed in London, Prague, Dublin, Limerick, Hiroshima and throughout the US, and has studied with acclaimed teachers such as Sally O’Reilly, Carolyn Stewart, Kala Ramnath, Mark Rush and Margaret Pardee. Hutchison completed her Doctorate at the University of Arizona in violin performance and ethnomusicology after attending colleges in Florida and Minnesota. She is currently a member of the music faculty at Cochise College and directs the Cochise County Youth Orchestra.

	Don Fox (Lighting Design) holds an MFA in Lighting Design from The University of Arizona and a BA in Theatre Administration from St. Edward’s University, Austin, TX. He is a distance/online lighting design instructor for Indiana University of Pennsylvania and has served as Interim Instructor of Lighting Design at The University of Arizona. Fox is a professional, freelance lighting and scenic designer and theatre producer and consultant whose clients include The Moscow Ballet, The Atlantis Resort Bahamas, Borgata Casino Atlantic City, Silversea Cruises, Music Theatre Wichita, Florida State University, Central Washington University, City Opera Ballet Company Bellevue, the San Antonio Botanical Garden’s Shakespeare in the Park, and many others. 	Shannon Wallace (Assistant Director) is grateful to be working with The Rogue Theatre again, having previously been stage manager for Uncle Vanya, Angels in America Part One, The Bridge of San Luis Rey and The Picture of Dorian Gray. She graduated from the University of Arizona with a Bachelor of Fine Arts, focusing on both stage management and lighting design. During her time in school she worked on over 25 productions with Arizona Repertory Theatre, including: Bat Boy: The Musical, Avenue Q, Love Song, Cymbeline, Nine, Boeing Boeing, The Man Who Came to Dinner, Oklahoma!, Lend Me A Tenor, The Full Monty and Othello. She also worked at Arizona Theatre Company on their Summer on Stage productions of Elephant’s Graveyard and Legally Blonde: The Musical. Additionally, she had the opportunity to work as assistant stage manager for Oklahoma City Philharmonic’s The Christmas Show 2014. And she enjoyed a summer with the Contemporary American Theatre Festival in Shepherdstown, West Virginia, working as part of the company and events management team.
Peter Bleasby (Master Electrician) lit his first show at 13. Professionally, he was with BBC-TV for several years, and was an assistant to UK lighting designer Richard Pilbrow during the inaugural production of the National Theatre (Hamlet, directed by Olivier.) He transferred to architectural lighting, but maintained his theatre interests by lighting many shows on both sides of the Atlantic. When the Rogue established itself at the Historic “Y” in 2009, he volunteered for the initial season, returning in 2013 with  lighting designer Don Fox, and later working with Deanna Fitzgerald. He devised the installation of the permanent wiring system that enables lighting teams to devote more time to the creative process. For the Southern Arizona AIDS Foundation he directs the technical and logistical aspects of fundraisers, including the fashion show Moda Provocateur.
	Susan Collinet (House Manager) earned her Bachelor of Arts Degree in Creative Writing and English Literature from the University of Arizona in 2008. Decades before returning to college as a non-traditional student, Susan spent twenty years in amateur theater, mostly on the East coast, as well as in Brussels, Belgium in the American Theater of Brussels, and the Theatre de Chenois in Waterloo. She has worked in such positions as a volunteer bi-lingual guide in the Children’s Museum of Brussels, the Bursar of a Naturopathic Medical school in Tempe, Arizona, an entrepreneur with two “Susan’s of Scottsdale” hotel gift shops in Scottsdale, Arizona, and as the volunteer assistant Director of Development of the Arizona Aids Project in Phoenix. Susan continues to work on collections of poetry and non-fiction. Her writing has won awards from Sandscript Magazine, the John Hearst Poetry Contest, the Salem College for Women’s Center for Writing, and was published in a Norton Anthology of Student’s Writing. In addition to being House Manager, Susan serves on the Board of Directors and acts as Volunteer Coordinator for the Rogue.
