We can look forward to some surprising, challenging,
and satisfying theater from The Rogue

Inaugural Season
2005–2006

The Balcony

This production was easily the richest and most rewarding piece of theatre I have ever experienced in Tucson.

—Iris J. Arnesen, The Opera Glass

The Balcony Jean Genet’s The Balcony is the story of a brothel in the midst of a war-ravaged city. In a series of vivid scenes, the occupants of the brothel engage in elaborate role-playing fantasies that mimic the nature of the society at large. Described by Jean-Paul Sartre as “Genet’s masterpiece,” The Balcony is rarely performed and promises to create a colorful and intellectually challenging opening to our season.  October 6–23, 2005.

The Fever

A work of great emotional directness.

—James Reel, The Tucson Weekly

The Fever Wallace Shawn’s The Fever has been called “a starkly written, harrowing journey into the dark night of the soul” (Booklist). Winner of the Obie Award for Best Play of 1991, The Fever asks a challenging question: How does one celebrate life while slowly becoming aware that poverty and the oppressed condition of other human beings are a direct consequence of one’s own pleasurable existence? An uncompromising tour de force, The Fever will be performed by Joseph McGrath.  January 6–22, 2006.

The Dead

Cynthia Meier has adapted and directed a compelling version of the Joyce short story, heartbreaking in its power, for the constantly amazing Rogue Theatre.

—Chuck Graham, The Tucson Citizen

The Balcony James Joyce’s The Dead, published in 1914, is the last and best-known of the stories that make up Joyce’s Dubliners, a memorable portrait of life in Ireland at the turn of the last century. A new adaptation for the stage of the wistful and musical story will feature a dynamic cast of seventeen and live traditional music from the local Irish band Round The House.   March 23–April 2, 2006.
